Jungle gym, sandboxes, swings and slides are all the things that parks are made from. King of the mountain, digging up your shoes, climbing heights, and sliding down the fastest are all the things that kids are made from. Regardless of the age or danger level there will be nothing more sightful or for that matter insightful as to watching the intriguing nature of kids attempting to do what we adults happen think twice about. Sure we may have a moment where we kid up a stack of leaves while walking in the park or dig a hole to put our feet in, but there’s something about the pure and innocence of a child who will instinctively kick up the stack of leaves and go back stack it together again then repeat. All for the raw laughter and enjoyment of the experience.

We had a moment to sit down with Briana’s father and talk to him about this afternoon shoot back in 2008.

Q: If you could transport yourself back to that day of the shoot, what was going through your mind as a parent while your daughter was shooting?
A: What went through my mind was how my daughter enjoyed taking photos. She felt so comfortable because we did the shoot in the park where she had been so many times.

Q: Was there ever a moment during the shoot that you probably thought that this wasn’t gonna work out very well?
A: No I didn’t. Briana just loves being in front of the camera.

Q: During this afternoon father-daughter photo shoot experience, as a father what is the one memory you’ll never forget?
A: The one shot we did where she was playing by the fountain in the park we just captured just one of those moments that will forever be a memory of mines.

Q: I’m sure it’s not uncommon to see a parent alone handling the kids during a day or activity. Experiencing this day with Briana, what are 3 tips you would give a family preparing to shoot with children?
A: Tip #1: I would say do it in a location where the child is most comfortable and they know the area so they don’t feel confined.
Tip #2: Let them act natural and not try to direct them so much for certain poses.
Tip #3: The parent should work hand in hand with the photographer so the child is getting direction from you.

Sometimes we take life for granted as we learn how to get caught up with work, responsibilities, and the demands we face as we get older. We loose sight of what it’s like just to live and let go. It’s about seeing life as it is without the effects of hurt, pain, or regret. It’s about no matter how many times we fall off or slightly burn our legs going down the slide, we hope that the next time will be as fun as the first. If not we move on, get a drink of water and find a friend to play with until it’s time to go home again.

We train to prepare for a better day and a better future. We plan in the hopes of obtaining and arriving to a destination that isn’t yet seen, to set foot to a foundation that can only be walked through a constant and daily battle. Life isn’t about the now, why or how. It’s about what are you willing to endure to get where you want to go.

Shooting with cadets Johnson and Scibica might have seemed to be taken in the most oddly location of all the places, yet it was the perfect backdrop and scenerio for our shoot.

We had the opportunity to ask them a few questions about this day back in 2009.

Q. If you guys could transport yourselves back to that day of this shoot, what was going through your mind at the time of your performance?
A. Scibica: “The one thing that was going through my mind at the time, was that maybe a photo shoot in uniform would be kinda of corny… but while I was doing and posing in each set, I realize that we were on to something that came out amazing.”
A. Johnson: “Actually, I was thinking, ‘Man am I really doing a photo shoot in my uniform?’ This is very thrilling and after looking at how the pictures came out I was ready for another shoot.

Q. Looking back would you, could you have done anything different during the photo shoot?
A. Scibica: “Yes. Take out my earings while in uniform. That’s against regalation haha”
A. Johnson: “I could have been less tense and more creative but now I know for further reference.”

Q. How was your experience in this photo shoot compared to other’s you’ve been in?
A. Scibica: “I enjoyed it mostly because one of my good friends was next to me threw the whole shoot. It’s something that we can always talk about and kinda brag about too.”
A. Johnson: “This actually my first shoot but I actually enjoyed the fact that I had the opportunity to do it with a childhood friend who is like a brother to me.”

Q. What tips or advice would you offer to anyone coming into a photo shoot?
A. Scibica: “Let your mind free and be creative. Make the picture what it is and don’t let it make you. Mostly just have fun, positive work and enviorment really shows threw photos… Just look at mona lisas painting lol.”
A. Johnson: “I would say be original, prolific, innovative, and just fun have while you’re doing the photo shoot.”

As kids we dream of the things we want to become. As young people we start our journey in the hopes of obtaining our dreams. As adults we understand that dreams are what we make them to be. It has been an honor to work with such examples of determination and strive. Despite it all life continues and so do we, making everyday count for what it brings us.

Music is a form of art that transends time and space, effecting the body, spirit and sould of an individual. When the heart of a performer synchronizes with the melody of a song, creates the perfect atmosphere for music to be experience instead of just heard. Covering events can be a fun filled time while working. We roam from person to person, clicking pictures, chit-chatting with guests, asking people to pose for the camera but to be taken back by a performance is quite the oddness of a day’s work.

I remember City of God taking the stage as they normally do as they perform. Setting up the equipment, sound check, song list and the whole nine yards. The band starts with their song intro and break into their set list as I’m taking frame after frame of each moment as each member of the bands perform their tasks in making music. Yet this one song from the night’s song list has taken me back at that, the debut of Dear Space Girl.

It may have been the relaxed jazzy soft R&B sound that was quite different for City’s main sound or possibly the imagative storyline of the lyrics and the break away narrative by lead singer Danny “Spaceboi Smalls” Foganholi. All in all it was a pretty impressive moment that came together in an unsuspecting but brillant experience.
